ABSTRACT

Contemporary Chinese science fiction (sf) literature provides manifold glimpses into the future. It creates spaces for possible futures of gender equality, thereby posing vital alternative futurisms to the government’s ideas of China’s future. By closely reading Chen Qiufan’s “G Stands for Goddess” (G daibiao nüshen G代表女神, 2011), this chapter demonstrates that the prevailing conservative and sexist ways of thinking in Chinese society can be explored through sf literature. The author argues that the narratives can be understood as alternative representations to explore female gender roles as well as to mediate their desirability.
