ABSTRACT
Climate change is real, and there is a growing volume of evidence that it is escalating with new risks and uncertainties. Changes in climatic conditions have significant implications for almost all aspects of human life. A particular need for human life is a shelter or a house. Climate change will affect housing variously with profound impacts on urban living conditions, location choices and the kinds of houses needed for the future. Since housing serves both consumption and investment demands, the implications of climate change in the housing market are complex, entwined and long-term. This chapter reviews various strands of existing relevant literature and highlights knowledge gaps concerning the implications of climate change for housing. It covers a range of issues related to both the demand and supply sides of the housing market. Topic areas covered include health outcomes, climate migration, urbanisation, housing location choice, regulations, policy effectiveness, retrofitting, house building and technology solutions.
