ABSTRACT

This chapter will consider in detail the appearance and development of specific political organisations which had amongst their rationale a desire to oppose strike movements between 1905 and 1914. Among these were groups on the political right of Russian society, including the Union of the Russian People (URP), as well as a number of much smaller organisations. These new groups appeared during and after the 1905 revolution, driven by the appearance of a wider strike movement. They desired and occasionally engaged in active opposition to striking workers. Their opposition to strikes can be seen in the development of a variety of mentalities and practices, with an anti-strike vision a typical feature of such groups. We can also see some armed opposition to strikes in diverse parts of the Russian Empire after 1905. Drawing on a number of examples emerging from within the milieu of right-wing politics, this chapter will aim to shed much-needed light on patterns of anti-labour violence that emerged in the late Russian Empire.
