ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the example of Environmental Rating Scale for Sustainable Development in Early Childhood (ERS-SDEC), which was proposed by OMEP in 2013. This rating scale was introduced as part of ESD projects in diverse socio-cultural contexts in England and Kenya. It is argued that scales like this one can provide a useful means of defining topics and aspects related to ESD in the early childhood classroom under two premises: (1) as long as they are not implemented under a culture of managerialism and rigid assessment and (2) as far as practitioners feel comfortable with them. Rating scales can offer the potential of supporting the ESD goals and related notions while working with young children and future citizens globally, if used and accommodated in a child-centred way.
