ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a project about approaches to the refugee crisis inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Trainee teachers from Liverpool Hope University compare good practice in teaching and working with refugee children in Liverpool and Cologne schools, looking at school induction programmes and pedagogy as well as the broader issues facing refugee children in the two countries. The chapter also considers the impact of the project on the trainee teachers’ knowledge and skills as well as their motivation to teach at a time of teacher shortages and whether the teaching programme might be adapted to increase opportunities to engage with refugee education for future trainees. The chapter reflects on the relevant impact of international and local experience in encouraging the trainee teachers to engage with global issues.
