ABSTRACT
Public support for arts and culture has been evolving. New hybrid models of governance, funding and management of arts and cultural institutions, characterised by the collaboration between the public and private sectors, have appeared. This study analyses the development of these models with reference to the Brazilian social organizations (OS) focusing on museums. The results indicate that museums managed under the OS model show a clear evolution in terms of attendance and revenue maximisation. The effectiveness of OSs in reducing dependency on public funding and enabling revenue diversification might lead these institutions towards greater financial stability and organisational sustainability.
