ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the consumer label of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is used as an example to explain the achievements of a successful sustainability label in the last 20 years. Scope and objectives of the label are described as well as gaps in addressing environmental and social needs in an ongoing social debate for responsibly produced goods. The chapter evaluates and reflects the limits of consumer labels from a practitioner perspective and describes existing gaps in addressing responsible production and responsible consumption. The two authors give recommendations for different stakeholder groups to address some of the described challenges. The chapter concludes with recommendations from the authors perspective.
