ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an attempt to nudge communities towards diets that are both healthy and respectful of environmental limits. Increasing evidence suggests that such diets are indeed possible; that a balanced diet can have both a low environmental impact and offer the nutritional requirements for good health. Identification and recommendation of such a diet requires a ‘nexus approach’ that considers the interlinkages between agriculture, health and environment. These key elements were integrated into the ‘SuChos’ social media application using artificial intelligence-based technologies, designed to facilitate sustainable food choices for consumers. SuChos also examines the power of individual decision-making, recognising the role of consumers in today’s agri-food system. It is envisioned that SuChos will increase transparency within the food system, help communities to monitor the impacts of their dietary choices, and align lifestyles with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
