ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the approach adopted by the gender equality officers at the Pessac-Gradignan-Talence campus of Bordeaux University on personal safety and gender-diversity issues arising from a 2018 campus renovation project (Opération Campus). To address these issues, an innovative methodology was developed, using quantitative and qualitative methods, involving an online survey and safety walks, to identify the places on campus where women feel unsafe. These walks involved the participation of gender equality officers, teachers, administrative staff and students. The results of the survey and walks were presented to the campus renovation project manager and campus steering committee. This chapter sets out the reasons behind the feeling of insecurity on campus, describes the methods used to substantiate concerns. Noting the resistance that the safety walks evoked on campus, the chapter concludes on how universities can respond to sexism, sexual harassment and assault on campus.
