ABSTRACT

In the Jewish tradition, the key resources that one would consider to be an essential tool in helping to resolve Israel’s land conflicts is the Jewish ethical approach to the just treatment of the “other” or “stranger”. During the 20th century a number of Jewish thinkers also argued that the command concerning love of neighbor must apply to non-Jewsh. In the run-up to voting in the 2015 Israeli election campaign, RHR released several public statements identifying these Jewish responsibilities as an essential aspect to voting. Rabbi Arik Ascherman referred to Torah teachings that condemn oppression and mistreatment of the “stranger”. Principles of justice and peace are an essential part of the Jewish prophetic tradition and its ethical and legal frameworks. The living out of these values is identified in the Torah as central to the covenantal relationship between God and his chosen people.
