ABSTRACT

Over the last two decades, sustainable business models (SBMs) have become a central subject of interest for both researchers and practitioners. Developing and implementing business models that align with sustainability can be considered one element of change towards more sustainable societies. From a research perspective, empirically investigating and theorising SBMs is key to developing the concept and deriving implications for practice. From a business perspective, changing existing business models or introducing completely new ones is an approach to addressing existing sustainability challenges while remaining competitive on the market. In these contexts, the SBM concept is used for various purposes, for example, as a tool for designing new business models or as a representation of the value logics of a firm. Due to this, and the fact that the field of SBM research is still young and emerging, we examine a variety of approaches to theoretically conceptualising and practically implementing SBMs. This book chapter aims to provide an overview of the emerging themes in SBM research, based on recent literature.
