ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 provides a guide to navigating the handbook, particularly the social-ecological systems (SES) methods discussed in chapters appearing in Part 2. The chapter briefly introduces the objectives and structure of the book and provides a summary of the process by which the methods included in the book (Chapters 5–32) were selected and grouped. It then gives an overview of the methods discussed in the book and presents a guide to the key methodological features in terms of which each of the sets of methods in Part 2 are discussed. Suggestions on how to identify potential chapters of interest are given with the aid of two tables that summarise the key features and applications of each of the methods discussed in Part 2. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of the most common ways in which the different methods presented in the handbook are combined in SES research.
