ABSTRACT

This chapter reports how Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 on gender equality has been reported and evaluated. Although sport is not specifically mentioned in SDG 5, the role of sport in promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls has been widely acknowledged. Examples of how organizations and programs measure their impact are given. Organizations that run sport for development programs have mainly reported basic descriptive statistics to measure progress toward SDG 5. Although there are limited details of how and why they were undertaken, it is likely due to the requirements of funding organizations. It is noted that few of these programs had comprehensive ways of measuring their impact, with more in-depth methods needed to fully understand the intricacies of any potential impacts. In this chapter, the authors discuss several implementation challenges to measuring impact. The authors argue for the need for sufficient investment and education to support high quality monitoring and evaluation to measure potential impacts of sport on SDG 5.
