ABSTRACT

Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 outlines eight targets for sustainable development and 11 indicators. Wars have been fought around water, rights have been assigned in arid areas; a public good, water is often loosely defined, hard to predict, and nearly impossible to own. In this overview of SDG 6, the authors present the ways that water has been organized in society, including water rights, wastewater and stormwater governance, and sustainable management of water. Next, they argue that, as it pertains to the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation, sport can be a driver to educate, presents an opportunity to influence environmental behavior, can be innovative, and can serve as the backbone of infrastructure. Finally, the authors move beyond “one water” and consider the role of greenspace, youth sport fields, and open spaces in the attempt to appropriately manage and maintain clean drinking water and water sanitation.
