ABSTRACT

As outlined by the Secretary-General’s 2019 Report, there has not been sufficient global progress toward Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6. This section aims to provide a discussion of the sport sectors progress toward SDG 6 by presenting academic research and examples of best practice in industry to build clarity in understanding and measuring sport’s progress toward SDG 6. Most of the research and industry examples are focused on the water component of SDG 6, which presents specific challenges and future directions. A four-quadrant framework will be presented as a way to allow researchers and practitioners to better understand, measure, and manage their progress toward both the hygiene and water components of SDG 6 in sport. The importance of the accessibility of sport facilities in progressing toward SDG 6 in future will be discussed as concluding remarks.
