ABSTRACT

Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles, is one of the greenest stadiums in the world, not just because the team colors are green. The Eagles have developed a comprehensive sustainability program that features one of the largest solar energy plants in the NFL, partnerships that reach far beyond sports, and a green mindset that is integrated throughout the entire organization. As the author discusses in this chapter, the team’s Go Green story all started with a humble beginning. The Eagles took the first step by simply placing a blue recycling bin under each employee’s desk. From there, it has grown into a multi-year curriculum and action plan that now incorporates green energy production and purchasing, recycling, composting, energy efficiency, reforestation, and water conservation. The program’s formation was driven by Eagles Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie with the opening of Lincoln Financial Field in 2003. The Eagles are a corporate citizen in Philadelphia, a city that takes great pride in its role as a global ambassador in sustainability. The team does its part by consistently asking questions and always challenging itself to think bigger and more innovatively so that its Go Green program continues to have a long-lasting impact on the environment.
