ABSTRACT

Sport can be a powerful engine for economic growth and development, and thus for contributing to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8. In this chapter, the authors discuss a stakeholder perspective to working toward SDG 8 in sport. They argue that successfully addressing SDG 8 requires attending to the needs and interests of individuals and groups affected by the organization and industry, including those who are less powerful and more vulnerable, and beyond those that directly affect financial performance. The conditions for stakeholders around SDG 8 are increasingly urgent due to the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, both of which are affecting employment and health and safety. The authors propose a thoughtful and strategic approach to stakeholder engagement around SDG 8 that prioritizes sustainability and sustained economic growth. Then, they discuss this approach with respect to several areas of sport that align with SDG 8 targets, including sport event tourism, sport and urban development, and labor rights and issues.
