ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors discuss approaches to measuring Sustainable Development Goal 8 (SDG 8), particularly in sport, and implementation challenges. They identify the national-level indicators used by the UN to assess progress toward SDG 8 in terms of economic growth and decent work, and specify the Commonwealth Secretariat model indicators adapted to sport. They also note that slow progress toward SDG 8 targets was set back significantly by the COVID-19 pandemic, with economic crises throughout the world. Building on national-level indicators, the authors discuss a variety of approaches sport organizations and researchers use to assess the impact of sport on SDG 8 in the areas of sport event tourism, sport and urban development, and labor rights and issues. Then, they discuss the challenges associated with both implementing and measuring SDG 8 in sport, including how to account for and involve relevant stakeholders. The authors close by offering insight around building sustainable partnerships for working toward SDG 8.
