ABSTRACT
The chapter contains discussion about the limited global progress made toward Sustainable Development Goal 9 (SDG 9), as reported in the Secretary-General's Progress Towards the Sustainable Goals report. Secondly, the potential for measurement of the SDG 9 indicators related to sport are addressed. There has been limited consideration of SDG 9 in the sporting world, and thus, the chapter is focused upon identifying opportunities for such connections. Sporting examples detailed include the 2010 FIFA Men's World Cup in South Africa, and two stadiums, Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam and the Gahanga Cricket Stadium in Rwanda. These examples are used to demonstrate that there are opportunities for sport to make contributions that align with the goals and targets of SDG 9, but that these efforts may not be readily captured in the official indicators. The final section of the chapter addresses some of the challenges to implementation and measurement of SDG 9 in a sporting context.
