ABSTRACT

Sport exists at the interface of the natural and built environments; the likelihood of a lasting, positive relationship is largely dependent upon foresight and planning, a notion embodied in Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11). SDG 11 focuses on the sustainability of cities and communities, and this chapter illustrates its wide and far reach. Sport can play a critical role in achieving the targets of SDG 11, as evidenced by high-level statements that emphasize the value of sport to cities. The challenge of making cities and communities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable requires implementing strategies and approaches from many different directions. This chapter includes a select review of the academic work on SDG 11 grounded in planning theory, political ecology, or environmental science. It concludes with a discussion of several ways in which sport and SDG 11 are connected, including sustainable design and environmental justice.
