ABSTRACT

This chapter defines the role of stadium developments in creating sustainable cities and communities. It addresses the need for modern stadiums to be the flexible venues capable of hosting a range of sporting and non-sporting events and highlight the opportunity to develop wider community facilities including transport connections within the context of stadium development projects. The authors advocate for best practice in accessible design and discuss the practical steps that can be taken to reduce the embodied carbon in a stadium, as well as reducing energy and water usage in the building. Finally, the chapter includes specific examples of stadium projects that are successful in how they address sustainability.
