ABSTRACT

This chapter examines Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12), which focuses on sustainable consumption and production. In an effort to reduce societal consumption, an analysis of the activities of the entire supply chain is conducted, opening the door for a more streamlined framework—because in this case, less is more. The authors argue production across the lifespan of products needs to be reassessed, because more production leads to more consumption. The chapter includes a summary of the key concepts associated with SDG 12, including the Tragedy of the Commons, externalities, cradle to cradle, circular economy, and eco-innovation. Additionally, the authors review the targets of SDG 12 and their current and possible future applications in sport. The chapter concludes with a critique of SDG 12 and some prescribed solutions. As the authors note, bolstering the SDG targets, whether by legislation or industry controls, is essential to ensuring the continued progress and ultimate success of the SDGs.
