ABSTRACT

Venues and events generate a lot of waste. Adjusting operations to ensure all of this material goes to its next best use can be complicated, especially at a PGA TOUR tournament with months of construction and almost a million fans. This is why the WM Phoenix Open, which has achieved a zero waste certification every year since 2013, offers sustainable material management best practices to even the most well-attended sporting events. While elements of this golf tournament are unique, this case study on the WM Phoenix Open provides eight elements that any sports venue or event should consider to prioritize waste minimization and diversion while designing for the dumpster.
