ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses measurement challenges and opportunities of Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG 13) within sport. It starts by outlining the progress that has been made worldwide toward achieving SDG 13. When turning to the sport sector, examples for environmental goals and green initiatives of sport organizations are provided. Afterward, three dominant methods for estimating the environmental impact of sport are explained, including environmental input–output analysis, ecological footprint analysis, and carbon footprint analysis through greenhouse gas accounting. The description of carbon footprint analysis is accompanied by an explanation of temporal, organizational, and operational boundaries which need to be set for such an analysis and different scopes of emissions. Applications of these three methods in sport and resulting empirical evidence are provided. The chapter ends with a discussion of various implementation challenges and the need for knowledge about the drivers of environmental impact and emissions, respectively. These drivers include a number of individual and organizational factors at work, and they can be addressed to reduce the environmental impact of sport organizations, participants, and spectators.
