ABSTRACT

The profound reach of sport suggests that it is a context in which a concerted effort to generate and sustain the health and well-being of the planet and all of its inhabitants may lead to much needed change. Recognizing this, the purpose of this chapter is to present a model that will aid sport organizations in structuring and measuring Sustainable Development Goal 15 (SDG 15) and its targets in sport and within sport organizations. By employing the systems thinking paradigm, sport organizations can challenge deeply rooted belief systems by encouraging action at every level. Specifically, recognizing the importance of shared responsibility, transdisciplinary research, multi-stakeholder participation, ecocentric practices, and the necessity of leverage points, sport organizations can design and employ interventions that will create change. Further, recognizing the necessity for aggregate measures allows organizations with the ability to measure multiple SDG targets and goals.
