ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the progress made toward the twelve targets of Sustainable Development Goal 16 (the promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies, provision of access to justice, and building effective and inclusive institutions) is identified based on their indicators provided by the United Nations. Statistical evidence from the UN Secretary General’s report is presented to evaluate the progress based on specific indicators relevant to each target. Exemplary cases of sport organizations, governing bodies, leagues, non-governmental organizations, and nonprofit philanthropic initiatives that have developed the ways to measure and evaluate practices related to SDG 16 are then discussed. These entities have established toolkits, such as Code of Ethics, to provide standards and resources to ensure all organizations working in sport have standards in place. Lastly, the challenges that aforementioned entities have been having to implement measurement strategies are identified. Understanding the challenges is crucial for developing multi-stakeholder actions to accelerate progress toward SDG.
