ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors discuss how the existing targets and indicators of Goal 17 have been and could be measured and reported within the sport context. A detailed review of the United Nations’ (2020) Sustainable Development Goals Report on the overall progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 17 is offered, followed by an address of scholarly exploration of SDG 17 across the sport domain. The review clearly reveals the critical influence of Goal 17 in the accomplishment of the SDGs overall. Consistent with previous scholarship, the chapter primarily focuses on two key components of SDG 17: policy coherence and multi stakeholder partnerships. A practical monitoring and evaluation example of a current SDP organization’s work toward Goal 17 is provided and suggestions are made for the application of toolkits and other resources available to aid sport organizations and nations in their measurement processes. As it relates to policy coherence and multi-stakeholder partnerships, the authors offer a discussion for the benefits of having sport-specific indicators as well as ideas for how sport-specific progress can be measured and reported. Finally, implementation challenges are addressed.
