ABSTRACT

This chapter is dedicated to sport development in Poland, with a particular focus on development for sport. As a post-communist country, Poland has been undergoing a complex transition, which has also been reflected in sport. The level of elite sport and mass participation in sport both decreased after the fall of communism in Poland, whereas today, several social roles have been assigned to sport such as increasing the level of health and fitness of society and developing social capital. The chapter includes a review of the strategic goals of sport development in Poland which are then compared to their actual implementation. Key observations include relative stability and consistency of Polish sport policy in recent years despite changes in governments and discrepancies between the strategic documents and the actual implementation of Polish sport policy.
