ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes different motives and modes of action that the notion of care has been suggesting to designers. In some cases, it appears to be still misused as an imperative to offer expert and increasingly innovative solutions, mostly informed by hygienic and technocratic agendas. On the other hand, care as a concern around more inclusive modes of designing is brought forward by some participatory approaches to architecture, and further strengthened by the influence of feminist ethics and its efforts in unveiling imbalanced power relations and excluded entities. Drawing on recent explorations of care as a way to ‘activate the possible,’ the chapter also touches upon an ongoing experience in which I am directly involved, where care is taken as both a conceptual and practical repertoire to re-learn my own architectural and research practices.
