ABSTRACT

The 2020 Olympics have a significant impact on how Japanese society treats sexual minorities. The Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) established a code that prohibits discrimination due to sexuality for all direct and indirect suppliers. The establishment of “Pride House Tokyo,” which was inherited from the previous mega-event in 2018 is another major step for sexual minorities. There are also legal developments, and although same-sex marriage remains unrecognized, there is growing attention to whether legalization of same-sex marriage will take place by the Olympics, and how it will develop thereafter.
