ABSTRACT

What do the Paralympic Games tell us about disability in Japan? And what do they tell us about the nature of athletic excellence? Although increasingly celebrated, the Paralympic Games still struggle for equal recognition, funding, and media coverage. This chapter serves as your guide to the Tokyo Paralympic Games, featuring unique approaches to accommodating disability in sports. It highlights the ways Japan is using the Games to improve accessibility and raise awareness of disability issues, intending to send messages of inclusion, equality, and empowerment. Is this an empty promise, or do the Games point towards a more accessible future?
