In the year of the Olympics, constitutional reform may be just the issue to compete with the mega-event for national attention. Constitutional reform has been on the agenda of quite a few Japanese prime ministers and it surely would by far be the most significant achievement of Abe Shinzo’s unprecedented long stint at the top of the Japanese government. With the opposition in disarray and a stable parliamentary majority, the year 2020 can offer a unique opportunity for Abe to do something no other prime minister has ever achieved before.
