ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the definitions, conceptualisations, and typologies of violence are addressed. Gender-based violence is recognised as a distinct form of violence given its historical roots in the domination of men, specifically White men, and the subordination of girls and women, particularly those who are racialised, sexually diverse, Indigenous, or those with a disability. This dominance continues today globally as indicated by prevalence rates of violence experienced by girls and women and those who identify as gender-diverse within and outside of sport. The forms of gender-based violence in sport are reviewed in this chapter and the lack of conceptual clarity is described as a barrier to advancing the study of gender-based violence in sport.
