ABSTRACT

This chapter defines psychological violence in sport and addresses various forms of psychological violence and prevalence rates. Consistent across various samples of athletes, levels of sport, and countries, is the finding that the prevalence of psychological violence as a stand-alone form is far greater than that of other forms of violence. Findings with respect to the psychological violence incurred in coach-athlete as well as peer-to-peer or teammate relationships are reviewed. Psychological violence is of particular significance because it is the most frequently reported form of gender-based violence and is inherent in all the other forms of gender-based violence. In addition to being elusive, psychological violence is endemic to sport, normalised by sport leaders, child athletes, and their parents, alike, which differentiates it from most other forms of violence.
