ABSTRACT

The chapter discusses issues related to food security management in the western part of the Russian Arctic, taking information support tasks into account. Key actors, indicators, threats, and existing instruments for food security management in the Russian Arctic zone are examined. Special attention is paid to existing relevant data sources, particularly those concerning local food, and to the food security problems of the Indigenous and rooted populations. The discussion of the applied ontology determines how to assess knowledge of food security at the individual level and the role of local food in food security in the Russian Arctic. Information support for food security management in the Arctic region is a complex problem; it requires the proper operation of large amounts of heterogeneous data from various sources. The penetration of digital technologies, coupled with modern intellectual information processing capabilities, offers new opportunities for effective monitoring and management of food security. This chapter offers preliminary findings concerning the opportunities and limitations of using digital technologies to build effective information support systems for food security management in the Russian Arctic.
