ABSTRACT

One of the most significant attempts to address the complex global challenges of our time is the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The concept of sustainability—meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs—is present today in most areas of knowledge to the extent that it is already recognized as a discipline within the educational sciences. This chapter position is that foreign language education could and should acquire an essential role in sustainability literacy within the higher education landscape. In language programs, the movement to CBI and active learning approaches to teaching and learning FLs naturally gravitates to sustainability. It introduces the reader to theoretical and pedagogical approaches that can be used to develop interdisciplinary—sustainability-oriented—content-based courses at all levels of FL curricula. .
