ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the issue of good governance in extractives and the promotion of peace, with examples largely from the Great Lakes and Eastern Africa region, but also elsewhere in Africa. Competition for control and exploitation of natural resources are not only major causes of conflict but also principal sources of funding for conflicts. In the Great Lakes region particularly, mining is marred by high levels of corruption and criminal acts that are perpetrated by armed groups. At the same time, informal mining provides income for many poor people seeking basic needs of life. This chapter explores ways in which, through the Catholic peacebuilding approach founded on Catholic social teaching, mining governance can be improved in order to benefit the majority of the population.
