ABSTRACT

This chapter by Elena Semino offers a personal reflection on becoming a public linguist. She begins by briefly introducing three strands of her research on metaphor and illness and the main ways in which, in collaboration with many colleagues, she has shared it with different audiences beyond her academic research community. Semino then presents and reflects on the opportunities, challenges and mishaps that she has encountered along the way and distils from them some lessons that may be helpful to others.
