ABSTRACT
Television series are inexhaustible sources of messages that penetrate into popular culture. The Handmaid’s Tale is a science fiction ustopia (a neologism that fuses ‘utopia’ and ‘dystopia’) that has many issues in common with the ideas of far-right political parties. The aim of this chapter is to propose a reflection on the misogynistic and anti-feminist content present in the fictitious Republic of Gilead from The Handmaid’s Tale that original book author – Margaret Atwood – sends as a warning of what could happen to women in this political context. To this end, a set of audiovisual codes featured through the mise en scene is analyzed, comparing them with those acquired by women activists in the real world. The handmaid’s uniform adopted for the first time by U.S. activists has become – through social media – a symbol of feminist struggle around the world and against political leaders such as Donald Trump.
