ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on gender and proposes two ways in which women can be centred in a decolonised political communication scholarship. First, it suggests that the androcentric dominance in the subfield be decentred to allow the establishment of gender-sensitive research as an equal and complimentary but not hierarchical research agenda in the subfield. Second, it proposes greater emphasis on contextualisation in research, not only to resist the homogenisation of women’s experiences but also to highlight the differences between women in African societies and those in other contexts. Following these two suggestions will inevitably lead to richer, more equitable and more diverse scholarship which will ultimately facilitate better theorising in the subfield.
