ABSTRACT

This Afterword places the essays collected here in the context of the recent movement to write the history of losers as well as victors, failure as well as success. It makes comparisons with the memories of losers in major conflicts, in Ireland, Poland, and the American South. It reminds readers of earlier chapters that the aim of the volume is to discuss loss, a broader theme than the history of losers, and that it includes colonization, imprisonment, and exile as well as defeat.
