ABSTRACT

This chapter delves into the shifting industrial and occupational structure of Vienna’s urban economy since 1995. We employ large quantitative datasets and advanced statistical methods to analyse the consequences of economic restructuring for stratification in the Viennese labour market. Whilst the negative effects of deindustrialisation have been moderate in comparison to other European cities, we argue that a certain degree of labour market inequality in Vienna is evident. Drawing on our empirical findings, we identify a trend towards ‘asymmetrical’ polarisation among certain social groups, whose labour market marginalisation has been exacerbated by the recent COVID-19 crisis.
