ABSTRACT

In this introduction to the volume, Amy Farrell articulates the historic connections between gender and fat, how they constitute each other, and how disruptions and changes to either category destabilizes the other. After discussing the history of the fields of Gender Studies and Fat Studies, and their shared emphasis on intersectionality, standpoint, and activism, she introduces the organization of the volume, the contributors, and multiple ways to read and understand the essays. Toward the end of the essay, she focuses her attention on the life and work of Cat Pausé, the Fat Studies scholar and activist who died unexpectedly in 2022 and to whom this volume is dedicated.
