ABSTRACT

This chapter assesses the linkages between policymaking processes and repertoires for policy performance in Africa. We demonstrate a tendency in the formulation of short-lived policies in Africa, resulting in little impact. Also, among others, political processes of public policy, budget deficits, dependence on external actors, institutional components and lack of research-informed policies have primarily contributed to policy failures across Africa. Accordingly, we recommend broadening stakeholder participation, research-based policymaking and strengthening policy-politics linkages to improve policy-effectiveness by African governments.
