ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the background and context for the volume. It outlines the major issues in the reflections on religion and climate change globally. It draws attention to the marginalization of both African voices and African religions in discourses on religion and climate change. The chapter highlights the growing interest in the role of religion in addressing the climate emergency globally, showing the internal debates. It reflects on the potential contribution of Ubuntu and indigenous knowledge systems to Africa’s response to climate change, while summarizing the potential of African religious leaders to provide effective interventions. The chapter then provides some insights into how the curriculum integrating African perspectives on religion and climate change would look like, placing emphasis on the need to embrace a gendered approach. Concluding, the chapter summarizes the chapters in the volume.
