ABSTRACT

When the Sustainable Development Goals were agreed in 2015, Goal 3 called upon the world to “ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all.” Health technologies are not ordinary consumer goods but rather essential goods, just like food and water. However, current systems for the R&D and delivery of medicines do not meet the needs of most of the world's population. This chapter assesses PDPs' effectiveness, according to the five pathways of the typology. It uses a mixed-methods approach to analyze the effectiveness of PDPs. Global funding for neglected diseases R&D has grown substantially in recent decades. PDPs receive a relatively small proportion of the total R&D funding for neglected diseases, accounting for 13.5 percent of the total in 2018.
