ABSTRACT

This chapter recounts the creation of the NYPD’s Counterterrorism Bureau and its two principal components: the Counterterrorism Division and the NYPD contribution to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. The chapter describes the Counterterrorism Division’s seven units and functional areas: the Terrorism Threat Analysis Group; the Threat Reduction Infrastructure Protection Section; the Training Section; the Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive Preparedness Section; the Special Projects Unit; NYPD Shield; and the Bomb Section. Additionally, the chapter recounts the growth of the NYPD’s contribution to the Joint Terrorism Task Force and the important role that it played.
