ABSTRACT

The chapter explores selected works of Professor Gerald Grace on Catholic Education Studies, mainly from the International Handbook of Catholic Education: Challenges for School Systems in the 21st Century and International Studies in Catholic Education. It navigates through areas which the author calls the innovations of Professor Grace in the field of Catholic education. These include ‘spiritual capital’ that gives inspiration to Catholic schooling, making graduates appreciate values that go beyond the cognitive search for knowledge. Another special interest dealt with in the chapter is the contribution of Religious Congregations in articulating the concept of Catholic education from the perspective of the agents of the education mission of the Catholic Church. The chapter also highlights a few challenges that if not taken seriously could compromise the quality of Catholic education. It concludes that Grace is an international influence in permeating understanding of Catholic education. The mentioned innovations provide new thinking through rigorous research to sustain the illumination that Grace has made in the discourse of Catholic education as an inadequately explored arena.
