ABSTRACT

The chapter begins with an evaluation of the contribution of Professor Grace to the promotion of the preferential option for the poor in Catholic schools. This is followed by a concise overview of the origins and development of the preferential option for the poor within Liberation Theology and the role of Gustavo Gutiérrez in this process. The next sections explore the scriptural roots of the preferential option for the poor with a focus on four passages from the Acts of the Apostles and Matthew 25:31–46. The chapter next focuses on the preferential option for the poor and Catholic schools and presents two case studies of the preferential option for the poor being enacted in Catholic secondary schools in Scotland.
