ABSTRACT

Mission integrity is perhaps the most important concept that Gerald Grace has worked on to examine the connections and disconnections between the Catholic mission of Catholic education and the practice in Catholic schools. He has consistently argued over the last 25 years that in Catholic education maintaining mission integrity is an imperative; it is non-negotiable. Gerald’s leadership and vision have provided educationalists, and the Catholic Church, with a prominent university-based Centre, a prestigious academic international journal and two significant international volumes together with his own ground-breaking and extensive publication list, which clearly place the academic study and research of Catholic education on an international footing. Gerald’s calling has been to ensure that Catholic education, as a field of study, takes its rightful and respected place in the academy. This chapter gives a clear and sympathetic overview of Terence McLaughlin’s scholarship.
